HOSE, HNX, UPCOM Explained: Vietnam Three Stock Exchanges

HOSE, HNX, and UPCOM are Vietnam three stock trading venues with different listing standards and risk levels. We explain each one so investors can choose correctly.

Three stock "marketplaces" of the Vietnamese market

When you buy a Vietnamese stock, it is listed or registered on one of three venues: HOSE, HNX, or UPCOM. Each has different standards, company sizes, and risk levels. Understanding the differences tells you what kind of stock you are buying.

HOSE — the largest, highest standard

HOSE (Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange) is Vietnam largest venue:

  • Lists large-cap businesses, with high standards for capital, profit, and transparency.
  • Where the most important indexes are calculated: the VN-Index and the VN30.
  • The highest liquidity, concentrating most market capitalization.

This is the venue of "blue chips" — suitable for investors who want relative safety.

HNX — the Hanoi venue, mid-sized companies

HNX (Hanoi Stock Exchange):

  • Lower listing standards than HOSE, usually mid-cap companies.
  • Has its own index, the HNX-Index.
  • Smaller liquidity and scale than HOSE.

UPCOM — for not-yet-officially-listed stocks

UPCOM (the trading market for public companies not yet listed):

  • The lowest standards, a "waystation" for companies not yet qualified for HOSE/HNX.
  • Mixed quality: both good companies awaiting listing and high-risk firms.
  • Usually low liquidity and high volatility — requiring careful investors who understand the business well.

Differences in trading rules

Beyond listing standards, the three venues also differ in the in-session price band (see ceiling, floor, and reference price) — UPCOM has the widest band, so higher volatility risk. The T+2 settlement rule applies across all.

How to choose the right venue

  • Beginners / safety first: focus on HOSE, especially the VN30 group.
  • Seeking opportunities in mid-caps: HNX, but research carefully.
  • UPCOM: only when you understand the business well and accept liquidity and volatility risk.

Whatever the venue, apply fundamental analysis and risk management.

Conclusion

HOSE, HNX, and UPCOM are Vietnam three stock venues with declining standards: HOSE (blue chips, safest), HNX (mid-sized companies), UPCOM (not officially listed, highest risk). Knowing which venue your stock is on helps you correctly assess its risk and liquidity.
