Profit Targets — Realistic Expectations vs Greed
Aiming for 100% per trade is a losing game. 5-15% per trade, compounded = wealth. Greed kills.
Unrealistic Goals Destroy Accounts
"I'll make 10% per month" (120%/year) sounds good. But Warren Buffett averages 10% per year with decades of edge. You? Unlikely.
Result of chasing 100x: High leverage, overtrading, one big loss wipes you out.
What's Realistic?
- Short-term (intraday/swing): 1-3% per trade, 5-10% per week
- Medium-term (weeks): 5-15% per entry
- Long-term (DCA): 10-20% per year is excellent
- Benchmark: S&P 500 averages 7-10%/year
Why High Targets Backfire
Target 100%, but price goes +10%. You hold for more. Rips back to +5%. You hold longer. Crashes -10%. Now you've lost instead of banking +10%.
Better: Hit 10% → sell → move next. Repeat 100 times = massive wealth.
Formula: Realistic Target
Set target = (Average market move × 1.5) to (Average × 2)
Swing BTC averages 8% in 2 weeks? Set 12-15% target, not 100%.
The 20-Trade Example
| Approach | Avg Win | Frequency | Monthly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1× large (100%) | 50% | 2/month | +100% |
| 10× small (3%) | 3% | 20/month | +60% |
Both same timeframe, but 20 small wins is achievable. 1 large win rarely happens without high leverage (liquidation risk).
